But the text had returned undelivered. ‘Let me know how it goes,’ he’d said as he’d helped her into the back of the cab. And so she had let him know, or tried to, but the texts had kept coming back undelivered. Phoning hadn’t worked either. In the morning she’d tried again and failed again and had then rung the hotel on the landline in case the cause was poor mobile reception. It was always dodgy at Mother’s. But the man on Reception had said Mr O’Malley had checked out early that morning. Where had he said he was going? What had he said he was going to do next day? She wracked her brains trying to remember. Did he say he was going abroad? On a business trip? With an early morning plane to catch? Why, why hadn’t she listened? Because you only had one thing on your mind, tart.

She had to concentrate on driving, even though she was only crawling now, in a line of bumper-to-bumper traffic. She hadn’t reached the A1 yet, was still on the approach road and there were lorries ahead for as far as she could see. And was this snow? Yes. Bloody great flakes of it. The windscreen wipers were going crazy. It would have made sense to wait till the rush hour was over, but if she had she might have murdered her mother.
